Balazsi Gallery is pleased to present Tomar Altura, a new body of work by Marco Bizzarri, on view in Space 1 as part of Art Palma Summer.
Developed through the artist’s journeys across northern Chile, the exhibition draws from an evolving photographic archive to explore landscapes shaped by industrial activity and extractivism. Within these environments, memory, atmosphere, and material conditions become deeply intertwined, forming the conceptual and visual foundation of the works.
Through layered painting processes and a distinctive use of line, Bizzarri constructs images that oscillate between representation and abstraction. His compositions retain traces of their photographic origins while simultaneously disrupting them, creating a visual language that is both precise and elusive.
Recurring motifs, such as isolated ladders, emerge as symbolic structures within the works. These elements suggest elevation and aspiration, while also evoking fragility and the precarious balance between presence and absence. Positioned within vast and often ambiguous landscapes, they function as markers of human intervention and as metaphors for transition and displacement. Tomando Altura reflects on landscape as a space of ongoing transformation, where the visible and the concealed coexist. The works capture a sense of suspension, as if time itself were momentarily held, allowing past traces to persist within the present.
Ultimately, the exhibition invites a contemplative mode of viewing, encouraging the audience to engage with what is seen as well as with what remains just beyond visibility. Through this interplay, Bizzarri proposes a nuanced reflection on perception, memory, and the shifting conditions of the contemporary landscape.
