The variable relationships between humans and nature form the basis of Matthew Verdon’s multidisciplinary practice. His approach focuses on complex and evolving systems, informed by processes of research and experimentation. The choice of materials in the work is highly specific. Environmental elements are juxtaposed with infrastructures and objects, particularly those used in attempts to subvert or control natural systems. This investigation does not privilege the human over the natural, or vice versa, but recognises their mutual and dependent existence at a time when such binaries no longer hold. The work utilises both natural and constructed elements in symbiotic processes, acknowledging the porous and interdependent impact of one on the other to highlight inherent connections, circulations, and co-dependencies.
