Ubiquitous No.14 is a group exhibition featuring conceptual, process-based, and performative works of art, curated by London-based writer Elaine ML Tam. The exhibition derives its title from Michael Thonet’s 1859 bentwood No.14 Cafe Chair, a revolution in design and one of the first instances of furniture disassembly for economic packing. Bringing together artists working across a diverse range of mediums, the exhibition explores the role of circulation and speed in facilitational ease, as factors that condition both our relationship to manufactured objects and the creation of the work of art. Considering the contemporary demand for speed and efficiency, the selection of artworks exhibited in Ubiquitous No.14 contends with themes including the design of everyday life; the crossing of human and non-human temporalities; the language of systems; the redundancy embedded within acceleration; the politics of interfaces and interstitial spaces; the malaise of massification; and the poetics of production and consumption.
